A good reminder…….
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us
to get to know someone we didn't already know.
개학 첫날 교수님은 자기소개를 하면서 우리! 들에게 말씀하시기를 우리가
여태껏 몰랐든 사람을 사귀도록 해 보라고 하였다.
I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me
with a smile that lit up her entire being.
나는 어떤 부드러운 손길이 내 어깨에 닿기에 누군가 싶어 일어나 주위를
돌아보았다. 거기에는 주름진 얼굴의 자그마한 노부인 한 분이 온 몸으로
미소 지으며 나를 환히 처다 보고
있었다.
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old.
Can I give you a hug?'
그녀는 말하였다. "이봐요 젊은 미남! 양반. 내 이름은 Rose 고 나이는
여든 일곱 살이요. 인사로 내 그대를! 안아도 괜찮지?
I laughed and enthusiastically responded;'Of course you may!'
and she gave me a giant squeeze.
나는 웃으면서 기꺼이 대답하였다. "그럼요 좋아요" 그러자 그녀는 나를
꽉 안아 주었다.
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married,
and have a couple of kids…….'
"부인께서는 어떻게 그렇게 젊고 순진한 나이에 대학에 다니시는지요?"
나의 질문에 노부인은 농담 투로 대답하였다! . " 난 돈 많은 남편 만나
결혼하고 두어 명의 애들을 가지려고 여기 온 거야"
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her
to be taking on this challenge at her age. 'I always dreamed of having
a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
"아니 농담하시지 말고요(농담이시지요)" 하면서 나는 물었다. 나는 무슨 연유로 그녀가
그 나이에 이런 도전을 하게 되었는지 궁금하였다. "난 항상 대학 교육 받는
꿈을 꾸어 왔었지, 이제 그 꿈을 이루고 있는 거야" 라고 그녀는 나에게 말하였다.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate
milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months,
we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized
listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
수업이 끝난 후 우리들은 학생 회관에 걸어가서 초콜릿 밀크셰이크를 함께 마셨다.
우리들은 단박에 친구가 되었다. 그 후 3개월 동안 매일같이 우리들은 수업이 끝나면 함께
교실을 나와 끊임없이 대화 하곤 하였다. 나는 그녀가 그녀의 삶의 지혜와 경험을 나에게
나누어 줌에 따라 이 "Time Machine"같은 그녀의이야기를 들을 때면 항상 그녀에게 매료되었다.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily
made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled
in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
그 해가 지나는 동안에 Rose(노부인)는 대학의 우상이 되었고 어디를 가든
친구들을 잘 사귀었다. 그녀는 정장으로 차려 입기를 좋아하였고 다른 학생들이
그녀에게 대해 갖는 관심을 한껏 즐겼다. 그녀는 그것을 즐기며 지내고 있었다.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet.
I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to
the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her
three by five cards on the floor.
그 학기가 끝날 무렵 우리들은 Rose 를 우리! 축구단 연회에 연사 (演士)로 초청하였다.
나는 그녀가 우리들에게 가르쳐 준 것을 결코 잊지 못할 것이다. 그녀는 소개를 받고
연단에 올라섰다. 그녀가 준비된 연설을 하! 시작 하였을 때 그녀의 준비된 연설문
요약 카드들이 마룻바닥에 떨어졌다.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me!
I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
조금 당황하고 쑥스러워진 그녀는 마이크에 다가와서 간략하게 말하였다.
"과민 반응해서 미안해요. 사순절(부활절 전 40일간 단식 참회기간)기간에는 맥주도
안 마셨는데 위스키를 마신 꼴이 되어 날 힘들게 하는군요! 이제 나는 연설을 준비 된
대로 하지 못하게 되었으니 그냥 내가 아는 대로 여러분에게 말씀 드릴게요"
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "we do not stop playing
because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
